Background

The COVID-19 pandemic was confirmed to have reached Somalia on 16 March 2020 when the first case was confirmed in Mogadishu-MOH announced that the government has set aside five million dollars to deal with the disease. The Somali Medical Association is concerned that the death toll in the country will be huge and that Somalia will not be able to recover from the economic effects due to poor working relations between central government and federal states which leads to lack of control by central government, as well and the lack of healthcare infrastructure. Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) outbreak poses serious concerns to global health and education systems. The goal of this awareness raising campaign is to prevent COVID-19 pandemic and improve hygiene promotion of Host Community, IDPs, and students in primary Schools in Dangorayo, Eyl, and Garowe districts, Puntland-Somalia.

General Description of the Training:

Teachers, students, CECs, host community, and IDPs training on COVID-19 Awareness Raising Campaign and hygiene promotion for IDPs, Host Community and Schools was established on January, 2022. Face masks, hand sanitizers, and social distancing were maintained through all the training period. The training was a discussion-like and participant-centered with variety activities. Due to the limited literacy of some participants, the level of knowledge was assessed using by both face-to-face interviews and self-administered evaluation papers. The participants were equipped by knowledge on the etiology and disease course, the incubation period, signs and symptoms, risk factors, transmission and prevention. 

 

Objectives and Expected Results

The overall objective of this awareness campaign is to sensitize the local community, IDPs, children, teachers and CECs of primary schools on issues COVID-19 pandemic and poor hygiene, particularly Corona virus by increasing their knowledge, capacity and understanding of the disease and its treatments process so that they can educate the community, IDPs, teachers, CECs, and children reached school age or primary schools in Garowe, Dangorayo and Eyl by increasing their knowledge of hygiene promotion and prevention of Corona virus pandemic.

 

Specific Objectives:

  • Increased awareness raising campaign on prevention of COVID-19 pandemic, and improved hygiene promotion of Community, IDPs, students, CECs, and teachers of primary schools in Garowe, Dangaroyo, and Eyl districts.
  • Increased their knowledge, capacity, and understanding of community issues of COVID-19 and effects of poor hygiene of primary schools in Garowe, Dangaroyo and Eyl districts.
  • Boost their knowledge on importance of COVID-19 Vaccine and Prevention Tools
  • Provision of PPE’s, Hand sanitizers, and Hygiene Promotion Tools
