Background
The COVID-19 pandemic was confirmed to have reached Somalia on March 16, 2020, when the first case was identified in Mogadishu. The Ministry of Health announced that the government allocated five million dollars to combat the disease. However, the Somali Medical Association expressed concerns about the potential high death toll and the country’s ability to recover economically due to poor cooperation between the central government and federal states, and inadequate healthcare infrastructure. The COVID-19 outbreak poses significant threats to global health and education systems.
The goal of this awareness-raising campaign is to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and improve hygiene promotion among the Host Community, IDPs, and students in primary schools in Dangorayo, Eyl, and Garowe districts, Puntland-Somalia.
Objectives and Expected Results
Overall Objective
The overall objective of this awareness campaign is to sensitize the local community, IDPs, children, teachers, and CECs of primary schools about COVID-19 and poor hygiene practices, with a focus on increasing their knowledge, capacity, and understanding of the disease and its prevention. The aim is for participants to educate their communities, particularly those in Garowe, Dangorayo, and Eyl districts, about hygiene promotion and COVID-19 prevention.
Specific Objectives
- Increase Awareness and Prevention of COVID-19:
- Raise awareness about the prevention of COVID-19 and improve hygiene practices among the community, IDPs, students, CECs, and teachers in primary schools across Garowe, Dangorayo, and Eyl districts.
- Enhance Knowledge and Capacity:
- Increase participants’ knowledge, capacity, and understanding of community issues related to COVID-19 and the effects of poor hygiene in primary schools within Garowe, Dangorayo, and Eyl districts.
- Promote the Importance of COVID-19 Vaccination:
- Boost participants’ knowledge about the importance of the COVID-19 vaccine and prevention tools.
- Provide PPE and Hygiene Tools:
- Distribute personal protective equipment (PPE), hand sanitizers, and hygiene promotion tools to participants.

Conclusion
The COVID-19 Awareness Raising Campaign and Hygiene Promotion training in Dangorayo, Eyl, and Garowe districts have significantly contributed to the education and empowerment of students, teachers, and the broader community. By enhancing their understanding of COVID-19 and promoting better hygiene practices, the campaign has laid the foundation for improved public health and resilience against the pandemic in these regions. The provision of PPE, hand sanitizers, and hygiene tools further supports these efforts, ensuring that participants are well-equipped to protect themselves and others from COVID-19.
