Smart Aid and Development Organization (SAAD): Empowering Communities in Puntland, Somalia

Smart Aid and Development Organization (SAAD) is an independent, non-profit, community based organization established in February 2015. Operating in Puntland, Somalia, SAAD delivers integrated, community-driven interventions aimed at improving the lives and resilience of vulnerable and marginalized populations.

SAAD’s work is structured around four core programmatic areas: Protection and Education; Health and Nutrition; Food Security, Livelihoods, and WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene); and Environment, Climate Change Adaptation, and Resilience, with strong cross-cutting commitments to disability inclusion, gender equality, and human rights.


Mission and Vision

Mission
SAAD’s mission is to protect, empower, and support vulnerable communities across Somalia through humanitarian assistance, sustainable development programs, and inclusive service delivery. The organization promotes dignity, equality, and access to essential services, enabling individuals to achieve improved well-being and self-reliance.

Vision
SAAD envisions a resilient and inclusive society where all individuals have the capacity, opportunity, and resources to take control of their lives, overcome challenges, and build sustainable and prosperous futures. This vision is realized through partnerships with local communities, government institutions, and international stakeholders.


Programmatic Areas of Focus

1. Protection and Education

SAAD prioritizes the protection and empowerment of vulnerable populations, including women, children, persons with disabilities, internally displaced persons (IDPs), and other at-risk groups. The organization delivers child protection, GBV prevention and response, PSEA awareness, and community-based protection services.

In education, SAAD promotes access to inclusive, safe, and quality learning opportunities through school rehabilitation, teacher training, non-formal education, and life skills development, with a strong focus on girls’ education and inclusive learning environments.


2. Health and Nutrition

SAAD strengthens community health systems by providing primary healthcare services, maternal and child health interventions, and disease prevention programs.

The organization also addresses malnutrition through screening, treatment, and prevention programs, including Infant and Young Child Feeding (IYCF) initiatives. Health education, hygiene promotion, and mental health and psychosocial support are key components of this sector.


3. Food Security, Livelihoods, and WASH

SAAD works to enhance household resilience and self-reliance through food assistance, climate-smart agriculture, livestock support, and livelihood development programs.

The organization promotes economic empowerment through vocational training, entrepreneurship support, and income-generating activities, particularly for youth and women.

In WASH, SAAD improves access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene services through infrastructure development, hygiene promotion, and sustainable water resource management, contributing to improved public health and dignity.


4. Environment, Climate Change Adaptation, and Resilience

SAAD integrates environmental sustainability and climate resilience across its programs. The organization implements climate change adaptation initiatives, disaster risk reduction (DRR), and early warning systems to help communities withstand shocks such as droughts and floods.

Additional efforts include reforestation, natural resource management, renewable energy promotion, and community-led environmental conservation, ensuring long-term sustainability and resilience.
